掠う

さらう【攫う･掠う】

1 〔奪う･奪い去る〕 carry off suddenly; snatch; grab and run [walk] off with…; (波が) sweep [wash] away; 〔誘拐する〕 kidnap; snatch; abduct.

●(タカなどが)野ウサギをさらう swoop up [carry off] a wild rabbit

・さっとバッグをさらって逃げる snatch [grab] sb's bag and run off with it

・とびに油揚げをさらわれる have a slice of deep-fried bean curd snatched away by a kite; 〔成果を奪われる〕 have one's 《customer》 snatched [stolen] away (before one's eyes)

・勝ちをさらう walk away [walk off, go away] with the victory

・子供をさらう kidnap [carry off, snatch, abduct] a child.

●彼は水泳中波にさらわれた. He was swept [carried] away by the waves while swimming.

・甲板にいた二人は波にさらわれた. The two on the deck were washed overboard.

・初出場のチームに優勝をさらわれた. We had the championship taken away from us by a team that was in the tournament for the first time.

2 〔そっくり自分の物とする〕 take over completely for oneself; snatch from everybody else; monopolize.

●人気をさらう capture all the popularity

・すべての賞を一人でさらう walk away with all the awards.

●その事件は町の話題をさらった. The incident became the talk of the town.
